The Rundown: An attack forces the elemental guardian to summon a group of young heroes to protect the planet.

Hope Island is attacked by a group of mercenaries and its protector Gaia is forced to run. As their forces get closer, she uses a set of magic rings to call on the power of the planet’s guardian Captain Planet. Unfortunately, her escape is short lived as a new kind of weapon destroys the guardian and Gaia is forced to send the rings off to find new champions.
Across the globe, a group of young people from different backgrounds find themselves in possession of great power and they use that power to defend others as they receive psychic pleas from Gaia begging them to find each other and unlock the power of Captain Planet.
The Story: Pepose creates a gritty, but not dark origin story for the Planeteers in this issue. The story has a more serious tone, but also allows for hope in the form of these characters and what they’ve chosen to use their powers to do. The original animated series this comic is based on is a little past my time, but this story has all of the elements of a great team series as the personalities of these characters feel grounded and accessible to the reader. I liked the action in this story a lot and look forward to seeing where it goes next.
The Art: Casallos delivers fantastic art throughout the issue. I like the updated character designs and how the design of Captain Planet seems to incorporate the elements of the Earth visually.
